1. If you have I4GL, it will be much easier to write a C-function (it may be available in user-group software repository) to read ASCII-file into I4GL-string and to modify the database. In this case except the C-function everything else can be written in I4GL. If you are using Informix-RDS, this could be much faster to develop, than any other Rapid-Development-Tools. 2. Another alternative is to load the file into a temp table with at least one char-column big enough to hold the largest record(max-record-length), then read from temp table and update/insert the required tables. But this will need enough dbspace to hold the temp table and all related overheads. I recommend and we use the 1st approch which will read one record at a time and process the information (update/insert) at the same time, and it requires only a C-function.
