Additionally to Neil answer I'd like to answer the second question.
I have an idea that will work definitely in ksh:
dbexport dbname -t >(compress - > dbname.exp.Z) -b 1024 -s 2000000000
Of course you have to assure that the resulting file will not be more than 2Gb
(on most systems without large files support I think).

I see where you are going here, but isn't this a two step process
where you will need the 'large' amount of space for a (short) time
before the compressions takes place?
