Yesterday, I had exactly the same symptom on a DynServer 7.30 on a SunUltra
4000 with an RSM-2000 RAID cabinet, but it wasn't a fresh install. Let me
explain!
At my current client site, some other DBA had installed only the DS engine,
and I needed the 4GL, SQL, and ESQL packages. The database already had data
in it. I am aware of the "rule of TEN (tools, engine, network)" that dictates
the installation order. I hoped I could just install the 4gl/sql/esql on top
of the engine, then reinstall the engine on top of the engine-only directory
to keep in compliance with that rule. When I finished all this, I was given
the same message: 'Cannot find message file. Check INFORMIXDIR and DBLANG'.
I never knew there was a DBLANG either, and I've been at this for six years!
I used 'truss -rALL -wALL -fao truss.out $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit -s' (same as
onmonitor/Mode/Startup) to try to locate which file it was not locating. (I
also had to run that truss as root because oninit is a setuid binary).
Without exception, it found EVERY single msg file it looked for. (failed
open() calls DO show up in truss's output, along with the errno value). At
that point, I didn't believe the message anymore.
My solution was to install all the informix packages to another directory,
copy over the etc/onconfig, etc/oncfg_$INFORMIXSERVER, and etc/sqlhosts from
my previous installation, and repoint my INFORMIXDIR variable to the new
location. (The second file is apparently where the information about all your
chunks and logs are stored, only the ROOTPATH is in onconfig). It worked
right away, and I did not lose any data. I'll wait a week before deleting
the old installation tree, just in case I find I need any more files from
before.
