Informix equivalent to Sybase DBlib

Informix Fans, In Sybase there is a thing called DBlib that is the library of function calls that are at a low level (they sit right on top of the database engine). I am told that the ESQL preprocessed code is transformed into these function calls (for Sybase). Is there any equivalent to this in Informix?? Please tell me there is.
