This happened two or three times. Each time we recovered from backups (archives and logical logs). After this we just put everything an raw disk and are living happily ever after. I don't think we ever completely figured out the root cause, but Informix OnLine 5.01 (maybe 5.00 at the time?) on our IBM RS6000 model 580 seems much happier using raw disk space.
