length of clob column

Hi There, A developer came and saw me yesterday and said that they used to be able to run string functions on clob columns under an old release of IDS but under the current version, it errors. IE select max(length(document)) from documents gives an error about not being able to resolve function. What functions are there available to check clob sizes? Version is Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.30.FC2 on solaris 8 Regards Chris
