Morgan I am not well versed in backup technology past the DB utilities (and as already noted, weak on rman, but I am responding to a post that is somehow or other coming to an Informix newsgroup) We have a backup team that handles enterprise wide backups whether they be from some shared files on a windows server or a DB on windows or unix. This team calls the shots, and right now, veritas is "in the house". For our DBs, we have a mix of Veritas backing us up to disk and tape. Veritas does more than tape. I have no clue what any of it costs. But Oracle ASM can not backup any of my Informix databases or any of my sqlserver databases, can it? Oracle ASM would be a vendor specific solution, while Veritas is not. >>I don't mean to be insulting but I don't think your DBA has modified >>his or her thinking in the last 10 years while the technologies >>available have changed dramatically. Well, now that I can not argue with because this particular DBA of which we speak 1) is not me :) 2) I have had go-rounds with this person about doing oracle in archive-log mode on a warehouse..... he/she insisted that was bad to do with oracle (prior bad experience). Whilst I have some respect issues with Oracle, I could not stand by that.... ... even I know oracle can do that.... 3) I made a break thru.... talked it over with the consultant on-site and had the consultant tell that DBA what's what. Some people don't even want to listen to new options from co-workers ... but "ooo a consultant, surely they'll know".... Not sure when the other two were pared from it but now this conversation is no longer relevant so lets take it to c.d.o.server or off-line. Thanks. -- Daniel A.
