gcc: language arch=v9 not recognized utils2_ak

I might be on the wrong list for this question. Attempting to compile the
utils2_ak. I suspected ESQL (part of csdk) is passing the arch=v9 argument
to the gcc compiler.
So I removed the -xarch from the esql script (in ids/bin) and now I get a
wrong ELFCLASS. I went to the Sun support site. Sun does support gcc, and
looks like it may be the main compiler in the future or maybe because they
also support some Linux on the sun systems. Anyhow I changed the script to
include -m64 gcc option. I got it to work but according to Informix support
(Arthur) GCC is not supported, never has been.
So what this means is that after 10 years running gcc on Sun Solaris with
Informix esql I now need to purchase the Sun compiler? Am I going to suffer
other problems using gcc or will this be reliable.
What do other people use for a C compiler?
Thanks for your opinions

I used ESQL/C with GCC on Sun/Solaris for many years. It works fine and is
perfectly stable. IBM just doesn't 'officially' support it. But it works.

Me too. But...
I have to patch each copy I get to let it work. I have the system
automated, of course, but it is a nuisance. Yes, I put a feature
request in - several years ago. However, just because I know what I'm
talking about doesn't mean that attention is paid to my feature
requests. It needs customers who know what they're talking about to
agitate for the feature too.
The other frustration I'm facing on Solaris 10 at the moment is that
both dbx (Sun) and gdb (multiple versions) crash rather than debug my
programs. This is very frustrating. It happens to some extent
whether I'm using ESQL/C or not -- but almost invariably when I am
using ESQL/C. I'm puzzled about this - it is things like the
debugging system not working and basic process control stuff - most
peculiar. If anyone has any ideas on this, I'm all ears. Some people
internally reported that it was important to use the same compiler
throughout - it actually doesn't seem to be part of the issue, though
it sort of makes sense (and more sort or doesn't). I'm using GCC
4.3.1 and Sun Studio 11. When not trying to debug, ESQL/C works fine.
It's just debugging that is hell.
