First try to ( I know this can be hard) educate the users to exit applications properly. Second you can make a shell script which monitors any specific application (you know their names) the app in question will lose its connection to the terminal you can identify those by the ? in the TTY column here is an example : UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME COMMAND joelr 295 1 0 Mar 17 ? 0:00 sh /master2/rel.6.0.1/bin/sh/rdsrun utdaemb1 1 8127 ARCUSTR1 joelr 3030 3029 0 08:29:16 ttyp8 0:00 -ksh joelr 6183 6165 0 Mar 17 ? 0:04 fglgo /master3/rel.6.0.3/bin/4gi/utdaemb1.4gi 6474 ARCUSTR1 joelr 302 295 0 Mar 17 ? 0:05 fglgo /master2/rel.6.0.1/bin/4gi/utdaemb1.4gi 8127 ARCUSTR1 joelr 304 302 0 Mar 17 ? 0:06 sqlexec sesel022 Service Here is a user who kill his app and now there are run away processes, those occupy memory and use CPU cycles . Another process that gets hung is the sqlexec, I have seen systems where every couple of minutes a cron job would start a shell to look for those and kill ...
