I guess that depends on which OS backup tool you use. For Online, using ontape, there's no substitute for doing a restore to a different (identically Informix configured) machine. If you need to verify the restore on the same machine, then it gets down to creating an identical set of dbspaces and redirecting the symbolic links before the restore.
