A user on AIX 6.1 asked whether there are known problems upgrading Informix 11.70.FC3 to the 11.70.FC8W1 fixpack. Art Kagel said he knew of no show-stoppers; the poster had already tested it without issues. Ben Thompson warned that FC8W1 introduced several regressions, notably APAR IT04819, where a level 0 archive can crash the server in the ontape thread, fixed in the special build 11.70.FC8W1X2 from IBM support. He suggested staying on 11.70.FC7W3 or moving to 12.10, since no FC8W2/FC9 is expected. The poster reported ontape and onbar working fine and noted the X2 build as a fallback.

Hi to all
i'm about installing the fixpack FC8W1 of the 11.70 version, and i need to
know if there is a known problem on this fc8w1
now the platform is on a AIX 6.1 with 11.70.FC3
thanks in advance
John:
There are "know problems" with all releases. If you are asking if there are
any show stoppers preventing you from upgrading to that particular release,
I am not aware of any.

For 'no known problem' you'd have to be on 12, you'd even have the choice=20
between 8+ fixpacks ;-)

When we looked at 11.70.FC8W1 we had a significant number of problems with
regressions or bugs new in that release. One issue you might run into as soon
as start running backups, which maybe you don't do in a test system, is:
APAR IT04819 LEVEL 0 ARCHIVE STARTED IN 11.70.FC8W1 CAN CRASH THE SERVER IN
THE ONTAPE THREAD
11.70.FC8W1X2 fixes this and is available from IBM support.
There are a few nice features new in xC8 but unless you're upgrading for a
specific reason you might be better off staying on 11.70.FC7W3 and look at
12.10 instead. I think the message from IBM is clear: upgrade to version 12
where you will be better supported and where bugs are actively being fixed.
On the 11.70 side you can keep asking for special builds to target specific
issues but frustratingly there has not been and almost certainly never will be
a 11.70.FC8W2 or FC9 release which would fix some of the issues in 11.70.FC8W1
in a generally available release.

Hi Benjamin
i've contacted ibm to know which version is the last for 11.70 and it was
fc8w1.
i've also tested ontape and onbar with this version and i had no pb
i keep in mind the x2 patch if there will be a pb .
thanks a lot
