It processes your sql.

No each connection takes one "slot" in the list of connections handled
by the poll thread.

The maximum number of poll threads that run on cpu vps cannot exceed
the number of cpu vps configured.
You can run as many on net vps as you like, check the manual each net
vp can handle 250-300 connections.
