Online Engine vs Standard

Brian We upgraded from SE to ONLINE several months ago. We also changed our hardware. from an AT&T 3B2-1000 to an AT&T/NCR StarServer E 660. Our application (mostly 4gl some C ) ported very easily. So did the database via DBEXPORT DBIMPORT commands. Some things to consider.... ONLINE IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL FROM SE. It requires much more setup planning and admin than SE. But once its configured it still needs more babysitting than SE. SE needed none. BUT ONLINE is meant for much larger databases with larger amounts of transactions (ADDS UPDATES DELETES). One thing you didn't mention is the SIZE of the current database and its expected growth. This is very important when Configuring or even Considering ONLINE. THe number of tables, rows per table, users (another hidden issue) and administrators would need to be considered in order to give a better idea as to which way to go. I don't mean to scare you away from ONLINE. But be prepared for more work for the Admins or another admin for Informix depending on you application's overhead. There is probably some more info I can't think of at the moment. If you'd like to give me a ring please do. I'll have thought of other issues by then. Regards Brian London Director IS J.M.
