can't drop an empty dbspace -- help please.
Posted in 2008
A DBA couldn't drop a seemingly empty dbspace (prod2dbs) with two chunks; oncheck output showed TBLSPACE TBLSPACE extents in both chunks, including one in the second chunk. Dropping the last chunk first was suggested but failed. Respondents explained the cause: the tblspace tblspace had grown over time (many tables/detached indexes) and, needing contiguous space, extended into the second chunk, which blocks dropping the chunk/dbspace. The advice was that only IBM advanced support could remove it; no resolution from IBM is recorded in the thread.

Hi gurus, We have a dbspace (prod2dbs) that is basically empty meaning no user table in it. It has 2 chunks (/product/prd_data_2 and /product/prd_data_8) but we just can't drop it. Perhaps the problem seems to involve with the tblspace tblspace, does anyone have any idea why this happens and how to resolve this? I just want to drop this dbspace out of the system. Thanks in advance. Can you drop the last chunk first and then try dropping the dbspace with the one remaining chunk? Thanks, ************************************** Ernie Knox Sears Holding Co. Hi Kern, Yeah you will have to call IBM support, this dbspace has to be dropped by advanced support. And you are right, it's the tblspace tblspace entry in chunk 7 that is the poblem. ----- Original Message ---- From: Kern Doe <kern_doe@yahoo.com> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2008 3:24:05 PM Subject: can't drop an empty dbspace -- help please. Ernest, I in fact did tried that and it did not work. Hi Kern, The typical reason is that you had a lot of tables and detached indexes in that dbspace at one time. As those objects grows, each one requires a single page in the tblspace tblspace , when the tblspace tblspace has to grow it take the coniguous space that it needs, which means if you fill up Chunk 6 at any time, that the tblspace tblspace will grab that space elsewhere in the dbspace, in this case Chunk 7. Hope That Helps. ----- Original Message ---- From: Kern Doe <kern_doe@yahoo.com> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Friday, April 25, 2008 9:20:40 AM Subject: Re: can't drop an empty dbspace -- help please.
