Microsoft includes a document (I think it is a .wri file) that discusses just how Access works via ODBC, and what is necessary for each feature to work. Due to the way it forms UPDATE and DELETE statements, it requires that there is some way to uniquely identify a row. It determines this by searching for a unique index on the table (you can't tell it what column(s) form a unique key). On Online databases having a primary key will create a unique index on the table that Access can detect. On SE, this is not enough, you must create a unique index. The index created by the primary key designation is not detectable by Access (at least not Access 2.0, I don't know about Access for 95).
