There is some kind of 4GL mode for Emacs available -- I'm afraid I can't be more useful than to say it's "somewhere on ftp.iiug.org". I don't use it myself (I tried Emacs once, but couldn't comprehend an editor that thinks that ^H (ie: Backspace) should envoke a help screen). Our shop develops with vi, in conjunction with 4gltags and vie. 4gltags is a freeware tool that generates "tag" files which let you "drill down" into functions by sitting on top of a "CALL" and hitting ^], and "pop" back up again by hitting ^T. It spans multiple source files too. vie is another freeware tool that lets you edit .err files directly, and correct the mistakes there (rather than making you edit the .4gl). These two are both "somewhere on ftp.iiug.org" and have increased our productivity enormously.
