A user on Red Hat Linux AS3 reported that overall system performance degrades badly while running a daily OS-level filesystem backup (using cpio) of machines hosting Informix servers, and asked whether a better third-party backup tool would help. Responders questioned whether the problem was really the tool, suggesting checks of tape drive configuration, whether the backed-up filesystem shares devices with the Informix dbspaces, sar I/O activity, whether dbspaces are raw or cooked (and which filesystem type), and what block size/parameters the backup uses. The poster did not reply further, so no resolution is recorded.

Hi,
Looking for advice on a file system backup of our IFX servers.
We have noticed that system performance goes in the dumper when we are
performing a daily file system backup.
We are currently using cipo for this task.
Is there a better 3rd party tool that you folks have experience with, and,
that seems to mitigate this problem?
Any other suggestions or advice?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Tam.

tar? I'm a bit curious why performance should suck when running an OS
backup ... possibly your tape drive isn't setup correctly?

Additional questions:
- Are your Informix dbspaces in raw devices or cooked files? If cooked
files, in which type of filesystem are they places (ext2,
ext3,Reiser,...)?
- What are your parameters used for backup operations (block size,...).
I assume that you use cpio (you said cipo)?!
