SAN to SAN copy of Data for Informix

I have a server which is having HBA issues with the SAN disk. This instance is 9.21 on AIX 4.3.3 and the devices are RAW. A suggestion was made to sync the SAN data to another SAN device, which allows for a better HBA connection. We are also upgrading this instance from 9.21 to 11.5 with AIX 6.1, but this is on another server, connected to another SAN device. My question is: Is it possible to have that old server data sync'ed to my new server SAN device, install and build the 11.50 instance, and connect these new raw devices to the upgraded instance? This would avoid the export and import of data from one instance to the other, which is about 200 Gb. That should work Ernie. As always you just have to be careful to cleanly shutdown the older server and make certain that the SAN sync is completed before you try to bring up the server on the new machine using the newer SAN. If the chunk link names are the same you should be good to go for an in-place upgrade to 11.50. Art Art S. So, 1. I should install the 9.21 on the AIX 6.1 server first. 2. Then make sure that all the links on the old server are the same on the new server. 3. Bring down the old server. 4. Bring down the new server. 5. Sync the SAN disk data from old to new. 6. Start the new server with the sync'ed SAN data. 7. Upgrade the 9.21 version to 11.50 on the new machine. Is this what you are suggesting? Should I initialize the new server 9.21 instance? The rootdbs (catalog databases) would be created, but would be later overlaid by the sync'ed raw devices. Am I thinking this out correctly? You don't need 9.21 on the new server, just 11.50. I'm saying: 1. Set up the sync between the two SAN's. 2. Sync. 3. Create the links on the new AIX 6.1 machine with the same paths as the 4.3 machine 4. Ordinarily before shutting down a server for an upgrade you should complete any incomplete in-place alter operations but I don't think that 9.21 supported in-place alter. Check that. 5. When you are ready... 6. Shutdown 9.21 on AIX 4.3 7. Make sure that the SAN's have completed syncing. 8. Bring up 11.50 on AIX 6.1 and watch it perform the in-place upgrade. 9. Go through all the usual post upgrade steps: 1. Drop all distributions. 2. Going from 9.21 you probably will have to drop and recreate all indexes (myschema can help since it will write out all of the indexes and constraints to a separate file from the create table statements and procedures if you pass two files on the command line). 3. Update statistics for all tables. 4. Recompile all stored procedures using update statistics (or dostats for simplicity). Note, if memory serves, 9.21's indexes weren't fully attached, but were probably semi-attached (in separate extents in the same partition as the data) so dropping the indexes will leave lots of little empty extents in each table's partition and the new indexes will not reuse them, so you probably should reorg larger tables with ALTER FRAGMENT ... INIT IN ... to recover the index pages for reuse. Art Art S.
