help with shared memory error

I've just installed Online Dyn. Serv. over Solaris x86 and am trying to initialize disk space and shared memory using oninit -i....I get a fatal shared memory error #156 (with no message). I've set my ONCONFIG, INFORMIXDIR, and INFORMIXSSERVER environment variables, I'm logged in as informix, my config file's root path points at an empty cooked file that I want to be the initial chunk of my root dbspace... Anybody have any ideas?
