No need to do anything - SuSE 6.2 comes with kernel 2.2.10, which has a dynamic fd table -- Ciao, Marco ______________________________________________________________________________ Marco Greco <marco@informix.com> Standard disclaimers apply! This can't be right, because I do get more than 2000 entries "can not allocate FD 3000", the 3000 counts down, until it reaches 1024. Why does this happen, if the kernel supports a dynamic fd-table. Why does this happen, if the kernel supports a dynamic >fd-table. Because the default hard and soft resource limits for the number of descriptors allowed in a process are 1024. Use your shell's builtin resource limit function ("limit" for C-flavoured shells; "ulimit" for Bourne-flavoured shells) to raise both hard and soft limits (in a root shell) to 3000 (or whatever you want). You can then arrange to start your database from that shell and it will inherit the higher limits. You also will want to ensure that you echo suitably large number into /proc/sys/fs/inode-max and /proc/sys/fs/file-max in order to raise the system-wide limits for file structures and inodes. --Malcolm -- Malcolm Beattie <mbeattie@sable.ox.ac.uk> Oxford University Computing Services "I permitted that as a demonstration of futility" --Grey Roger
