Here's one way:
create my_tab ( i integer, null_date date ) with no log ;
insert into my_tab ( i ) values ( 1 ) ;
SELECT leave.effective_return_date,
"" cleared,
"" absent,
"Y" Resident
FROM leave
UNION
SELECT my_tab.null_date
morning_attendence_check.mac_cleared,
"" absent,
"Y" Resident
FROM morning_att_check, my_tab
i.e. create a special dummy table "my_tab" which contains exactly one row,
and has a NULL in a column of the appropriate type. A bit of kludge but it
does work. Of course, if you are using 7.3 then use the method given by a
previous contributor.
