Informix instance configuration on raw devices.
Posted in 2009
A user asked whether an Informix instance can be built on raw devices (LVM/VxVM volumes or raw disk slices) on AIX, HP-UX and Solaris. Answers: yes, Informix works well with raw chunks, no special setup needed; multiple chunks can be carved from one device using an offset in onspaces. The poster's own recipe was confirmed as correct: symlink the raw device (e.g. /dev/rdsk/...), point ROOTPATH/ROOTNAME at the link in a new onconfig, set DBSERVERNAME/SERVERNUM and sqlhosts, then oninit -iv. It was also suggested to add a shared-memory (ipcshm) connection for local maintenance, which only needs an sqlhosts entry plus optionally a NETTYPE line.

Hi, I want to create informix instance running on Raw devices. Is it possible to configure Informix instance on Raw devices? Here, - Raw device can be a LVM/VXVOL created on a raw disk and there is no file system created on it.. ex. /dev/vx/dsk/vgname/volume1 - Raw device can be /dev/dsk/c13t1d7 - Host used : Aix, HP-UX, Solaris If possible, please pass me the hints. Thanks Saravanan

You can as raw device as storage backend. it can enhance performance. see more: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.ad min.doc/admin386.htm
Informix LOVES RAW devices for chunks. Nothing special you have to do. If
you want to define chunks that are not the whole device you can use an
offset in the onspaces commandline to define multiple chunks on the device.

Hi,
I configured the informix instance in raw devices by using the below mentioned
steps.
Step 1) I created a symbolic link
ln -s /dev/rdsk/c12t0d5 /mount/inst3/dbspace_conf/rawdb_dbspace
Step 2) Created a dbspace on /mount/inst3/dbspace_conf/rawdb_dbspace
Step 3) Then created a new onconfig.rawdb & sqlhosts.rawdb files and updated
the following values.
onconfig.rawdb file
===================
ROOTNAME rawdb_dbspace
ROOTPATH /mount/inst3/dbspace_conf/rawdb_dbspace
DBSERVERNAME rawdb
DBSERVERALIASES informix_rawdb
SERVERNUM 100sqlhosts.rawdb file
===================
rawdb onsoctcp express.ind.hp.com 9095
informix_rawdb drsoctcp express.ind.hp.com 9097
Step 4) Then, set the necessary env variables and started the instance with
"oninit -iv"; rawdb Instance is running now.
Is it a correct way to configure the instances running on Raw devices..??
Thanks Again,
Saravanan
Yup that's it. Personally I always want a shared memory connection type
configured for maintenance use, but that's a different issue.

Hi,
By using sqlhosts file, we can identify the instances whether it uses shared
memory or sockets as IPC. right.?
For Example ,
# cat sqlhosts.sarav1sarav1 onsoctcp sportage 9090Here, it uses socket for IPC.
If i want to use shared memory for IPC, If i change it in Sqlhosts file, is
that enough ?
Do we need to change any parameters in onconfig file ?
Thanks
Saravanan
You don't need to change anything in the onconfig gule, but you may want to
configure a NETTYPE entry for ipcshm rather than living with the defaults.
