People who can definitely fit on one tape can "get away with it" but if
something goes wrong (such as an unwritable tape), it'll be hours before you
get to try to fix it the next day, and that means your only workable backup
is a few more hours older. Most businesses can't really afford that loss of
work.
In my opinion, when someone does the work and follows a ritual, any changes
of behaviour can be detected much sooner and more reliably.
