It's basically an intro to Online and give you a good start. It is all about setting up Online, takes you through setting up an instance using Onmonitor+ what all the ONCONFIG parameters mean. 2 is basically database admin, createing database, grant/revoke, when/how to creating indexs, update statistics + distributions (what they are, when/how to create them). 3 is straight performance tuning, you need to be very comfortable with - the concepts behind Online, dbspaces/chunks, what VPs are and the roles of each different type etc - the onmonitor commands (you get to change parameters+see the effects but things goo quite fast). - Basics of what the Onconfig parameters mean. I did 1 (a 5 day course), had a two month gap then did 2 (a 3 day course) and 3 (a 2 day course) in one 5 day week). I would split things up a bit so you get some practice in the middle rather then try to cram it all at once. Otherwise 3 might will just be a fast forgotten blur. >months experience were prerequisites for course 4. From what I have heard this is an 'internals of Online type course', they did not run it in the UK when I took my courses (~June 1995!). Sounds a bit like the last day of 1 when we were doing hex dumps of Online pages and learning how online allocates space and how it updates pages. > >On looking at the INFORMIX website again this week, I noticed that course 2 >doesn't appear in the course description under the Server Administration >section, course names have been changed to reflect Operating System This makes sense since 2 is admin of the database rather then the database engine. Online admin and database admin are really separate roles under Online. For Online admin you need root access (for allocating raw disk partitions only, [or else be friends with the UNIX admin!]). Most Online admin is done as user informix a privileged user who can access all the databases. Database admin however can be done by a normal user who has been granted dba prviileges on that database, an possibly cannot even connect to other datbases. >platforms (UNIX and WinNT) and of all the US training sites, only Denver >has courses 1, 2 and 3 scheduled for successive weeks (beginning March >2nd). All the other training sites have either courses 1 and 2, with >course 3 overlapping (so I can't attend all of them); or they just don't Doing course 3 is well would be too much, you really need a break to let the concepts since in and get some practice with Online. >have course 2. Is it being merged/renamed? I would expect it is under Database Administration, possibly with the Triggers/SPL course which I believe is a course on it's own. At least I heard people being called in for that course whilst at Informix UK in 1995. > >3: If courses 1 and 2 are prerequisites to course 3, why aren't > they scheduled to run in successive weeks, so non-US citizens > or out-of-state US citizens can save on travel/accomodation > costs, not to mention valuable time, when they take these courses?
