ER tool
Posted in 2013
A user asked for a low-cost or free ER/data-modelling tool that can reverse-engineer an Informix schema, ruling out ERwin (too expensive, weak community edition) and IBM Data Studio (too heavy/slow and poor Informix fit). Suggestions from the list included an ERwin 30-day trial, Oracle SQL Data Modeler via a JDBC connection (no native Informix support but workable), Microsoft Visio Pro using the Informix Client-SDK ODBC driver, ServerStudio (already used, but licence cost was the issue), SquirrelSQL's graph plugin (judged too limited) and JSQLTool. The poster said he'd try Oracle Data Modeler first, then Visio, but no final outcome is recorded in the thread.

Hi, Anyone use a ER tool with Informix able to do reverse enginer? Low cost or free ... All I tested so far... anyone works... :( In past (10 years ago) ERWin was a excellent choice , but today has a very high price for my situation and their "community" edition is a joke.... and I not sure if today it is compatible with Informix was early... IBM Data Studio is out of question... or I need to buy a new desktop able to run it... and probably will run slowwwwww..... Cesar --f46d043be18c27031c04dcd620d6
ERWin used to have a 30 day free trial that would do the job nicely Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Cesar Inacio Martins Sent: Thursday, May 16, 2013 8:49 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: ER tool [30280] Hi, Anyone use a ER tool with Informix able to do reverse enginer? Try Oracle Data modeler, has no real Informix support, but can reverse engineer with JDBC connection. I used that only once to give a customer a view on his model, not for SQL generation. Hi Marcus, Interesting! I will download it. I was tried connect with the SQL Developer 3.5 but they don't have support to informix... I don't try the Oracle Data modeler before because I think will get the same problem.... I post here later if will works for me. Thank you! Hi Spokey, Is what I'm using today, but the company have only 1 license and isn't renewed a couple years... We are two DBAs and I if is possible (so only 1 can use by time), I want the developers using this tool too. This way the server studio become expensive. Did you know this can be done in Microsoft Visio Pro with any ODBC data source, including Informix Client-SDK? It's not too expensive, and I often find people have it already. Regards, Doug Lawry
SquirrellSQL have the Graph plugin but it is somehow limited.
