Fatal Error in Shared Memory Creation
Posted in 1999

Hi everyone,
I am new to informix.
Really learning lot of things from this newsgroup. For couple of early
question I recieved good solutions. Thankyou.
This time I am facing a problem in Informix On-line startup with Fatal
error in Shared Memory Creation.
After installing Informix 7.24, I was trying to setup Informix from
Off-line to On-line mode through 'onmonitor'
> onmonitor > selected 'mode' > then selected 'startup'
I got the following error:
initializing, please wait ...
oninit: Fatal error in
shared memory creation
press return to continue....
I am not able to set to 'On-line', I am afraid anywhere missing out in
setting the configuration.
Can any of you help me, to how I can resolve this problem.
Thanks n regards,
Harish
Have you verified that the kernel parameters are set correctly?

Hi Harish,
most of the time there will be some message in your online.log (find
path and filename in ONCONFIG). Try oninit from the command-line; it's
possible that you'll find messages at your console as well. You could
also try oninit -v (verbose).
You could check, if you find Shared Memory Segments using ipcs.
Hope this helps,
Peter

Hi Harish.
There could be many reasons that causes OnLine doing such a
thing. First of all check if your kernel params are set, as described
in release notes. Then you must initialize OnLine. Do it with "oninit -
iy" command. This is relatively long process, dependent on your
configuration. During this process monitor OnLine state through the log.
You must see something like "Sysmaster database built succesfully".
After this completes, your system is OnLine. But remember, that this
initialisation step performed only once - as you initally install and
setup OnLine. This operation is destructive to your OnLine data.
If you already initialise your server, and check kernel params,
and anyway got the same message, then it's time to look into your
ONCONFIG. Check, shared memory params there. Pay attention, that size
of your shared memory is not more, than amount of physical memory
installed + swap. For more advices send us your online.log and ONCONFIG.
