Places that provide message feeds do so in xml format so yes it is plenty useful, pity informix does not have it. Funny Obnoxio your own company says DB2 XML is a good feature, see http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/db2xml/DB2+pureXML+Case+Studies "UCLA Health System cuts information processing times from weeks to hours using IBM DB2 9 with pureXML" "New York State tax agency uses pureXML to simplify filing of more than 2 million returns already" So how come Informix does not have this feature bearing in mind that DB2 has it and it is the same company? Answer me that clown...

I'm sure you could say all sorts of things, but in all the customers I've actually spoken to about XML, absolutely none of them have showed any interest in sticking it into the database without shredding it first. > Funny Obnoxio your own company says DB2 XML is a good feature, see > http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/db2xml/DB2+pureXML+Case+Studies > > "UCLA Health System cuts information processing times from weeks to > hours using IBM DB2 9 with pureXML" > "New York State tax agency uses pureXML to simplify filing of more > than 2 million returns already" Well, I don't work for either of those, so I couldn't possibly say. > So how come Informix does not have this feature bearing in mind that > DB2 has it and it is the same company? I dunno. Why don't you ask IBM? -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com I will now proceed to pleasure myself with this fish. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

PureXML is in fact a good thing. For some purposes. But you don't need it to do some XML stuff. Specifically, you don't need it to handle some XML within the normal OLTP stuff. You may need it, or find it particularly useful for document centric applications... Speaking like Ian, I could say "I could tell you some stories of customers who ask me if 'IDS supports XML'". Most of the times the conversation ends when I ask them "what do you want to do?" Many times they really only want a CHAR, LVARCHAR or CLOB... After showing the IDS 11 XML functionality they're really not interested. And I don't even need to talk about BTS. Other times, when they say "I'd like to check the XML" for example, I usually ask if they "want to put that load inside the database engine?" and "what is the advantage of doing so?". And usually the answer is "not really/don't know"... Regarding the fact that "DB2 has it, IDS doesn't..."... Oh well... We could make a long list of the differences... and that doesn't necessarily mean anything. All this of course is off-topic... I never worked with column oriented databases. But they obviously have their space. Regards.

Well you can't speak like Gumby, not even I can do that all the time and I am Gumby damnit! :-P I could pan the XML feature, not very worth while when you consider how customers use XML ... > All this of course is off-topic... I mean if you keep your data lean on a node, and then have many multiple nodes you can do things where you get a performance boost. This is why I am curious as to see how column data types in IDS would perform. _________________________________________________________________ Bing brings you maps, menus, and reviews organized in one place. http://www.bing.com/search?q=restaurants&form=MFESRP&publ=WLHMTAG&crea=TEXT_MFESRP_Local_MapsMenu_Resturants_1x1
