4GL application migration to work against SQL Server
Posted in 2006
A user asked how to migrate an Informix 4GL application so it runs against Microsoft SQL Server, and whether existing logic could be reused rather than rewritten. Respondents suggested third-party 4GL-compatible tools that can run the existing code against other databases — Querix, Aubit, Four J's Genero and IBM's EGL. For a Java route, one poster recommended IBM Rational EGL, which includes an i4GL-to-EGL converter said to handle ~95% of code, over ArtinSoft, whose 4GL-to-Java service no one in the thread had experience with. No final choice or outcome is recorded.

Hi, Could anyone provide any guid what is the most practical way to migrate 4gl application running against IDS so that it run against SQL Server ? Even if you do a total rewrite is there any way to use some of the existing logic ? Thanks, Gil
Have a look at Querix, Aubit, Four J's and EGL. You should be able to reuse most of your code. jgp > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list- > bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Gil Lapid > Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 01:06 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: 4GL application migration to work against SQL Server > > Hi, > > Could anyone provide any guid what is the most practical way to migrate > 4gl application running against IDS so that it run against SQL Server ? > > Even if you do a total rewrite is there any way to use some of the > existing logic ? > > Thanks, > > Gil > > _______________________________________________ > Informix-list mailing list > Informix-list@iiug.org > http://www.iiug.org/mailman/listinfo/informix-list
There are a number that will run your 4GL code. Genero www.4js.com for example -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Gil Lapid Sent: Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:06 a.m. To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: 4GL application migration to work against SQL Server Hi, Could anyone provide any guid what is the most practical way to migrate 4gl application running against IDS so that it run against SQL Server ? Does anyone have experience with artinsoft.com http://www.artinsoft.com/wp_newway.aspx They say they move 4GL to Java ifxmaillist@quanta.co.nz wrote: > There are a number that will run your 4GL code. I do not think Art in Soft a concrete success story about it. If you'd like to go the Java way, I would consider IBM Rational EGL. EGL is a 4th generation language, similar to 4GL which generates Java and relies on Java technologies, like JDBC for accessing the DB. IBM provides a code converter from i4GL to EGL, which is told to convert about 95% of the code. They provide a nice document for I4GL migration, where they list pitfalls, etc. Then you become a bit more independent and can easily turn your EGL business logic into Web Services for SOA, Web apps, etc. EGL is not super-intuitive now but you start to find quite a few good documents about it. > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list- > bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Gil Lapid > Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 02:52 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: 4GL application migration to work against SQL Server > > Does anyone have experience with artinsoft.com > http://www.artinsoft.com/wp_newway.aspx > They say they move 4GL to Java > > > ifxmaillist@quanta.co.nz wrote: > > There are a number that will run your 4GL code.
