When chunks are removed unconditionally

I am using informix ver 5.X online engine. Here since it is a development site, we have the chunks as unix flat files. Say file1, file2, and file3. One of the files, say file3 has been removed by our sys. administrator. So database with only two chunks. The system was not coming to online flashing the message that chunk "file3" couldn't open. What are the possible solutions to recover except from the backup. Can we up the engine with only two chunks? Thanks in advance Dhanesh. K.V.
