I didn't see your reply, though the list has been playing up. I once heard that when asked why we have a maximum of 2GB for chunks, someone answered; because 2GB disks are the fastest. But I don't know how much truth there is in that. By the way, it's Kevin, and not Carol. :-) His surname is Carroll.
