Escape codes in reports (?)

I tried to put escape codes, directly and using back-slash, in an .ace file, but couldn't get it to work. Actual escape codes will be flagged as errors by saceprep! Backslashes are printed as just that to the printer! Any success? Don't want to use a script file.
