Hi we are trying to develop an application in New- Era version 3.11 beta release. I have some questions if someone can help with them. Is there any official version of New-Era 3.XX and if there is is it really working on application software ?? . In this beta release we face a problem with unexpected errors in windows 95-98 and Nt. When we open multiple windows after some time of using the application the program aborts with no error message. We are recording the resources of the windows in terms of memory and they dont seem to have any problem . I sould mentione that the application is an entire 4gi program. Is there anyone with some suggestions or solutions to that problem ?? . Please help ASAP. Thanks in advance . qsp@ath.forthnet.gr
We built/ported several NewEra applications for our clients in 1997-1998 and we still work with NewEra and support these applications - yes, applications and NewEra both work... The latest official release of NewEra is 3.11 to my knowledge. There was to be a 3.12 release sometime in 1999 although I have not heard about it lately. Even though you are saying that the window resources seem to be OK, a window resource problem with NewEra was fixed in version 3.10. This has to do with the NotifyClose member function for wif files. If your application is not making use this member function, then most likely this is your problem. How to use this member function is explained in NewEra 3.10 release notes. If you are already using this member function, then here are some other suggestions: 1. Check and make sure you do not have what I will loosely call "recursive" function calls within wif files. One example of this is calling the start member function from within that same window. This almost always crashes the app in our experience. 2. If you can, reduce the use of supertables in your application. These are big resource hogs. 3. If your application is crashing even under Windows NT, then there must be a really serious problem. We do have one application which we are looking at for a client currently which does have some resource problems under Windows 95/98, but is running fine under NT. 4. Going back to NotifyClose: double check that you are setting all the wif controls to NULL in the NotifyClose member function... Hal Maner M Systems International, Inc. We are tring hard to get away from New Era, because Informix is not going to support it any more. If you still think you should start a new project with New Era, then there is a release version of 3.11. You may still be able go buy it from Informix. Take care! :) Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
