Carlos San Miguel asked whether Informix has a one-byte signed integer type. Jonathan Leffler said no; SMALLINT (2 bytes) is the smallest integer type. scottishpoet suggested a user-defined type could implement it, and Leffler agreed it could be written but would need many implicit conversions. Answer: not available natively.

Is there a one byte signed integer variable type in Informix SQL? I've
read several of the informix manuals and can't seem to find one. I see
there is INT and SMALLINT only.
TIA

No - SMALLINT (2 bytes) is the smallest pure integer type.

Theoretically, couldn't someone write a UDT of their own to implement
a one byte signed INTEGER?
And if they thought other people might find it useful they could post
it on the IIUG site?

Yes - a UDT could be written. It might be an interesting exercise to
do so, especially considering the number of implicit conversions that
might be needed.
