Re: Synonyms to an SE database

I tried to set up distributed access with SE a few months ago and experienced the same problems. In my case we wanted to use the same SE table in two databases and thought that we could do so using synonyms. I did find in one of the manuals, I think it was guide to SQL syntax that the syntax to address a table in another database is only supported for IDS - that's what the ol means in the syntax diagrams. regards Malcolm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerry Cassidy" <gerrycassidy2002@hotmail.com> To: <informix-list@iiug.org> Sent: Thursday, November 27, 2003 11:06 AM Subject: Re: Synonyms to an SE database > I don't have access to a SE system to try it at the moment, but ... > according to the SQL Tutorial manual in the SE section of the product > library http://publibfi.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/7883a.pdf ... it > seems you can. > > Back in the old days, we used to create NFS partitionsand alter the > dirpath values to point to a different server for remote C-ISAM > access. > > Blame IBM if I'm wrong :') sending to informix-list
Well, I stand corrected. Based on Malcolms wisdom and the feedback from Andy, this is not supported syntax. Please excuse my rusty-ness. It's obviously a case of the right manual in the wrong place ... and there doesnt seem to be any platform specific icons for that syntax in that manual (other than the + which indicates an ANSI extension). Have you tried changing dirpath in systables or am I barking (up a gum tree)?

OK - I think this was discussed here earlier this year. First of all, as eventually got established, you cannot have direct synonyms to tables in other databases in SE -- if you want distributed database access, you need OnLine or IDS (or XPS) with support for 2-Phase Commit (2PC) to ensure that things work properly. > Have you tried changing dirpath in systables or am I barking (up a gum > tree)? Secondly, although you can do this, you have to be both extremely careful and extremely confident to do this. And it is normally simpler to replace the files in DatabaseA.dbs with symbolic links to the corresponding files in DatabaseB.dbs. Even then, there are restrictions on what you can do - and NFS mounts are certainly not encouraged (for reasons of performance if nothing else - network locking is slow). If you go Googling, you should find a discussion of this earlier this year - http://tinyurl.com/wtqw seems most apposite. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/
