overspecifying size of raw device
Posted in 1995
Earlier I had promised the Net that I would report my findings on "overspecifying a raw device's size", so here it is: I tried specifying over the raw device's capacity one more time when creating my dbspace. Well, Informix OnLine 5.01.x (running on SCO/UNIX 3.2.4) didn't complain except when I was way over as to exceed the "max # of pages in a dbspace". Then a whim hit me and I modified /etc/conf/node.d/hd (and one other file in that same directory hierarchy - sorry I can't remember what it was now <blush>) and hand removed a few extraneous HD nodes I had created inadvertently when adding a new HD a long time ago (I did mkdev hd for too many times); then I rebuilt the kernel and guess what: Informix started to utter "won't fit" (well, not those exact words) when I overspecified the size again! So there, maybe I had somehow screwed up our SCO/UNIX. I then thought of using a part of the HD for a filesystem and so I ran "divvy -f /dev/dsk/6s0" but divvy died saying "Can't create temporary nodes" (well, something to that effect). I can live w/o this filesystem but I'd love to know what that error message means. This question, however, I shall direct to SCO/UNIX users/experts. PS: the "extraneous HD nodes" sitution is like this: I have 2 IDE HDs and 1 SCSI HD. So I had /dev/[r]dsk/[01]s* nodes for the 2 IDEs but /dev/[r]dsk/6s* nodes for the SCSI HD. /dev/[r]dsk/[2-5]s* were extraneous and they had the same sets of major/minor numbers as /dev/[r]dsk/1s* (the 2nd IDE HD).
