Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Re: Planning a new Installation
Answered: green (solid confidence) — Asker thanks Art Kagel ('Thanks a lot') after receiving detailed hardware/OS/filesystem architecture recommendations for a new 11.70 install.
Smith John asked for a recommended architecture for a new 11.70 installation. Art Kagel advised Linux on Intel Xeon E5/E7 bare metal, avoiding virtual machines, RAID5, BTRFS and journaling filesystems. When asked if this suits production, he said yes and listed AIX on Power7/8, Solaris on SPARC T5/T6 and HP-UX on Itanium as also working well.
Auto-generated by Claude from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.
Linux on Intel Xeon E5 or E7 processors works very well.
Avoid Virtual Machines - bare iron only.
Avoid RAID5.
Avoid BTRFS - initial testing shows poor performance with Informix.
Avoid any journaling filesystems or disable the journaling if possible (ie
on EXT3/EXT4).

Yes. Others work well also. AIX/Power7 or Power 8, Solaris/Sparc
(preferrably T5 or T6 processors - the earlier Niagra (T-class) processors
were not suited to use for databases and other complex processes),
HPUX/Itanium.
