Physical restore failed - function write physical
Posted in 2010
Poster tried to restore an ontape level-0 archive from an AIX box running IDS 9.40.FC8 onto another AIX box, using 'ontape -r -rename -f convert.txt' to remap chunk paths, and got "Physical restore failed - function write physical restore failed code -1 errno 0". Replies debated whether -f existed in 9.40 (it did) and warned that backup and restore servers should run the same IDS version. The poster later reported success: the real cause was leftover pending oninit -r processes and shared-memory segments from earlier aborted restore attempts; after the sysadmin cleared the ipcs segments, the restore with -rename -f worked.

Hi,
I have a dataserver on an AIX box. I made an ontape backup of this dataserver.
Now, I'm trying to restore this backup on another AIX box
where the source raw devices was created with differents names and differents
links path names.
I create à file (convert.txt) containing the conversion beetween the source
chunks paths and the destination chuncks paths. I've different binairies on
the two AIX box : the backup was made on Informix IDS 9.4.0 FC8 and the
destination box contains Informix 9.2.4 FC9.
This is what I get when I run the restore on the destination box :
#ontape -r -rename -f convert.txt
Please mount tape 1 on /dev/rmt1 and press Return to continue ...

The -f option is an 11.xx feature, IDS 9.40 didn't support it. You will
have to create the original chunk paths as links to the real chunk
files/devices in order for the restore and subsequent engine startup to
work.

Hi,
Thanks fro your answer. I'm running 9.40 Infromix version as I explained
before. And below are the options of 'ontape'. As you can see there's the '-f'
option :
informix@pcoi01:pcoipcoi_tcp:/produits/informix> ontape
ontape
usage:
{ -a |
-c |
-l |
-p |
-r [-rename {-f <filename> |
-p <old path> -o <old offset> -n <new path> -o <new offset>...}]
[-D DBspace_list] |
-s [-L archive_level] [-A database_list] [-B database_list]
[-N database_list] [-U database_list] }
-a Automatic backup of logical logs
-c Continuous backup of logical logs
-l Logical restore
-p Physical restore
-r Full restore DBspaces/BLOBspaces as listed
-s Archive full system
-A set the following database(s) to ansi logging
-B set the following database(s) to buffered logging
-N set the following database(s) to no logging
-U set the following database(s) to unbuffered logging
-rename rename chunks during cold restore
with -rename options :
-f <filename> pathname of file containing list of mapped
chunk pathnames and offsets
-p old pathname of chunk
-o old offset of chunk
-n new pathname of chunk
-o new offset of chunk
Program over.
I guess this is because the '-f' option can be used
Best regards
I belive that you DON'T use ontape backup on 9.40.FCx and restore on
9.40.FCy,even though they are have the same BIG VERSION 9.40 but with
different SUB VERSION. ontape can only run normal at the same machine
type,OS,the IDS version and the chunk path, the limit of ontape use like a HDR
system. See more 'IBM Informix Administrator's Reference'.

Also, there is NO WAY you are going to restore a 9.4 database using a
9.2 engine,
both machines must have the same IDS version as the restore program
told you very plainly !!

But you can't restore a 9.4 database using a 9.2 installation !!
Keith
Thanks,
I'll try to install 9.40.FC8 as the (ontape) backup was made with this version
and try the restore again. You said '.... ontape can only run on .... and the
chunk path ....'. Does this means that I can't used the -f otpion on this
version ?
Regards
Hmm, I am getting old and can't keep track any more. For example I've
forgotten did you include the -rename option?
You REALLY should quote at least part of the post to which you are
responding. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! Most of us do not use the web
interface to these forums we use the email gateway and there is no threading
we can use to follow along even if we are willing to fill our mail queues
with old postings!!!!!!!!! I just happen to figure out that you are
replying to me and what I said.

'ontape -f' can be use in this 9.40 version.
But I don't verify that the backup on FC6 can be restored on FC7 or other sub
version.
I think you'd better set the two box the some IDS version for backup and
restore.
Best wishes!

Hi,
It's working now. I guess I got this message becaus I tried to run ontape more
than one time. There were many oninit -r processes pending and instead of
running 'onmode -k' I killed this processes (with unix command kill). The
oninit processes disappeared but not the ipcs. SO I asked the system admin to
kill them. I could, then, use ontape version 940FC9 (with this -f otption
without problems) on the output of ontape -s (version 940FC8)
Many thanks to all
