The problem isn't with the DBTEMP for your applications, it's with the value of DBTEMP when you start up I-Star. Remember, when sqlexecd is started it reads its execution environment AT THAT POINT. INFORMIXDIR, SQLEXEC, TBCONFIG, etc are all read when sqlexecd is executed by root. Most likely you have DBTEMP set to a non-readable/writable or non-existent directory. The error will most likely be intermittent since I-Star will only run into the problem when it needs to create a temp file.
