Format: PUBLICATION "Article Name" Summary of Article [Date, Location in Publication, Author] Informix in the News --------------------------------- (03/10/98) SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE "Information Innovator: He Invented Relational Databases to Keep His Job" Michael Stonebraker, chief technology officer at Informix, helped to develop the technology behind relational databases while he was a professor at UC Berkeley. He founded Ingres Corp. to market the technology, which was later bought by ASK Computer Systems. He then went to work to develop the object-relational database. Stonebraker then founded Illustra to market the object-relational database, and joined Informix when it purchased Illustra. (Jamie Beckett, 3/5/98) VAR BUSINESS "The Database Dilemma: Informix" In this Q&A with Informix CEO Bob Finocchio, he offers his ideas of ways VARs can react to the changes in the database market. He suggests that some VARs will want to diversify like Sybase and Oracle, others will want to focus on reselling Microsoft products in the low-end, shrink-wrapped area, and there area still others who will chose to become more application-specific and focus on a complete solution. Finocchio also reassures resellers that Informix is remaining competitive both with its object-relational technology and by offering data warehousing and web content management to accounts where Informix is not the existing OLTP vendor. (Ian Jacobs and Jackie Poole, 3/3/98) PCWEEK "Embattled Database Makers Shift Focus" Informix and Sybase face similar pressures as they try to come back from previous financial problems. Informix CEO Bob Finocchio stated that in spite of making a fourth quarter profit, Informix still needs to work hard to continue the financial turn-around and to regain customer confidence. He said that Informix plans to focus on data warehousing, high-performance OLAP and web content management. Sybase, for its part, is also looking towards data warehousing, web computing and mobile computing to help improve its financial situation. (Mark Hammond, 3/2/98) NEW MEDIA AGE "BBC's Digital Future Vision" The BBC joined with Informix to develop the Pilot Operating Center (POC). The POC was developed as a prototype of what consumers' homes could be like in the futureand features technology which would allow viewers to select the shows they want to see and when they want to watch them. The POC is currently a demonstration to stimulate debate and to give BBC staff an understanding of the concept of digital vision. (staff writer, 3/5/98) PC WEEK "Informix Offers VB Assistance" Informix is shipping Data Director for Visual Basic 3.0 which will ease development of database applications written in Visual Basic. It features improved drag-and-drop database access, offers more flexibility in choosing a development environment, and allows deployment in Web and Windows environments with ActiveX components. Beta tester Greg Schumann of Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio is quoted saying that he took at least one month off his development time by using Data Director for Visual Basic 3.0. (Mark Hammond, 3/2/98) DOW JONES NEWS SERVICE "Indonesian Bank to Use Informix Server for Internet Banking" Bank Papan of Indonesia will use Informix Dynamic Server for its Internet banking service. The bank has developed an in-house application for its mortgage loan origination system using Informix Dynamic Server. The bank also plans to develop Internet-based online banking applications.
