Can ping, but can't connect.

Online 7.2UC1 on Unixware 2.1.1 Something happened all of a sudden and we're not sure what the problem is. While things worked fine previously, suddenly clients can't connect to the server. Two members of a replication pair can ping each other. User "informix" Dbaccess from each can access the other w/o a password (hosts.equiv - OK). Traceroute shows a single hop from one to the other. But data replication fails to make a connections. Other users can telnet to the server to run Dbaccess. But their Delphi programs can't connect to the server. Someone else set up the DNS server and routing on this machine. I don't know a whole lot about networking TCP, so I'm not sure just where to begin.
