Traditionally -408 errors are very difficult to find. It normally means that the database engine has crashed before you sent it a command. Therefore it is not the CLOSE DATABASE that is causing the problem. I would look into what you did last before the CLOSE. I would also suggest that you should check the STATUS variable following all SQL statements - and that includes DATABASE statements.
