I'm in the process of setting up a new Unix server and when I set up informix, it created a directory in root called INFORMIXTMP and put the following file in it: prw-rw-r-- 1 root informix 0 Nov 8 17:29 VP.fsc_ppp.0100a Can anyone tell me what this is and what it is used for? I don't have anything set for the root filesystem so I don't know why it put it there or what it is. Just curious....

It holds some named pipes and a few 'dot' files that are all created at the time the engine starts up. The file you found, VP.<servername>.<hex> is one of these named pipes (note the 'p' in the first column of the ls -l output). The directory and its contents are required. Art S. Kagel
