Why, a well spec'd Solaris with a reasonable amount, not excessive, can run without any swap and can be configured to use virtual swap >You need AT LEAST 1x memory since UNIX System V.4 copies every > running program and its memory to swap at startup and loads it into > memory from there. How? the SVR4 pager process surely is not capable of paging vnode pages out and can only page the anonymous pages. Being pedantic the opening processes causes page faults and therefore the paging process is triggered, not the swap process. > My local sysadmins were of the 1x-2x persuasion > until I beat them over the head to increase swap to 3x and our memory > and swap problems went away.
