You can write a shell wrapper to convert the "A" to "????????A", then
pass that value as a parameter to the Ace report
(e.g. sacego rptname "$shellvar"), and define input_var as a parameter
within the report. Then, just do:
select col_1,col2,col_3
from table_1
where col_1 matches "$input_var"

Completely wrong. Page 5-38R gives a specific example of matches with an
input variable.
