I'm having some difficulty upgrading from OnLine 5.0 to 5.01 and was wondering
if anyone could shed some light on the problem.
First of all the platform is an AT&T StarServer E running Sys V Rel 4 v 2.1
It is an OnLine server only so there aren't any other packages or processes
getting in the way.
After making a couple of archives, I installed the new software. No errors
were reported. I loaded I-Star; again without errors. I brought up tbmonitor
and brought the engine to quiescent mode. The engine log showed a normal
startup. I brought the engine to on-line and checked all the system
parameters. The right number of dbspaces were there with the right amount
of usage, archive history, number of logical logs and the usage of the
current log, etc. As I think back, I didn't look to see if tbmonitor
showed any databases.
I exited out of tbmonitor and brought up dbaccess and went to see what
databases it saw. Nothing came back. I exited out to the command line and
invoked dbaccess with a database name. I got a -457 error and kicked out
of dbaccess. I went back into tbmonitor and the status line said the deamon
had died but that the engine was on-line too.
The status option wouldn't let me shut the engine down because the deamon had
already died but I couldn't start-up or go on-line because shared memory was
already initialized. I checked the system processes and sure enough all my
tbinit -s processes were still there as well as a new sqlturbo process with
a 5.01 identifier in the process name string.
I finally had to shut the system down which generated some failed consistancy
check messages in the log file. I tried getting into the engine several times
each time wit the same result. I finally reinstalled 5.0, brought up the engine
and everything is just great.
Nothing that I saw in the docs mentioned having to do anything special to load
the software. Though there was mention of license deamon software prompts,
none appeared during the install. The install process did indicate a successful
install though. I thought I knew all the magical incantations for OnLine (at
least the most important ones anyway) but were new ones introduced this year
at the User's conference ? :) :) Seriously though, I'll be calling tech
support on Monday (shouldn't there be down system support over weekends??) to
see what they say but if any of your weekend warriors have an idea of what's
wrong, please e-mail.
Thanks.
Carlton
