Getting more support from Informix
Posted in 1994
[ caution: Informix Flame follows - hit 'n' now if you don't want to read about support issues and general bashing ] We have been using Informix here for quite some time. In the past the need for techincal support has either been low or at the mercy of Informix support itself. (i.e. Newbie Programmer, etc) Now, in dealing with larger applications and more complex 4gl coding, we are running into a number of problems. Most of which Informix has never heard before. Although in research, many here have responded to me that they have the same problem and accept it as 'typical' for Informix. We can no longer afford 'typical' problems with this database. My request is for those of you who have worked with other products; is there a way to get better support and patches from Informix without having to jump through hoops and/or is there a database that we could port to that would have better support (and same level of advantages of 4gl). Many of the problems we present to Informix are the type that would require 'massive coding changes'. Such as the ever loving call/return/case memory leak problem. (Yes, they are working on a new rev for us on that issue) But the issue stems down to getting a more proactive response from Informix and getting a better attitude to the problems. Something other than 'that would require a major rewrite to fix the problem and we don't think we'll have that done before 2094...but you could spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$'s and upgrade to 5.0 on XXXXX platform and not have that problem'. Yes, perhaps I'm venting steam. But it seems that Informix does not understand the Unix marketplace nor does it understand that when there is a problem with the product, they are not willing to fix the product without major and just cause. In light of this, is there anyone that has a good comparison between Informix and Sybase?
