Also if it >support it, is there any performance problem? Yes, Informix can support *really* *big* databases, I've even seen people run databases over 200 GB using Standard Engine. On a SCO box. :-) Even cleverer people will try and run huge databases with over 1000 users against Standard Engine by throwing insane amounts of hardware at it, despite the warnings of those in the know. (Hey, Chris? :-p) The big limit in SE is that you can only accommodate 2GB as the total size of all the data in a table, or 2GB for the total size of all indexes on the table (they're two distinct issues). Also after a single table's data or indexes gets bigger than 1GB, you start having unstable indexes. If you upgrade to IDS7.x, you will find that you can far more easily accommodate large data volumes (especially. I currently work on a server where we store nigh-on 50GB of data for operational reporting, and we're looking to grow that quickly. Of that 50GB, BTW, 32GB is in one table! :-) I have a sneaking suspicion that Art Kagel runs a pretty big database, and I'm sure there are many others here too. From a marketing point of view, Informix have this NASA project called "Mission to Planet Earth" where they allegedly store 1 _TB_ (1000GB) of data _per_ _day_! I've also seen a site where they had over 400GB of data in IDS, and there were no issues there. So I don't think you'll have any problems. :-) HTH. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Clownster, Have you thought about using Linux RAM disks for SE? Then the whole data base could be in memory. Kinda throws a whole new twist on things. Dump it out for a backup in seconds. I'll be experimenting with this one myself. By the way I also head 8.3 will have in-memory table capability. Should be very slick. Thanks, Tim Obnoxio The Clown wrote: > > From: "Christian Hamel" <christianhamel@videotron.ca> > > > > I'm just curious.
