KAIO: out of OS resource
Posted in 2005
A user on IDS 9.4 / HP-UX 11i with KAIO enabled saw repeated "KAIO: out of OS resources, errno = 11" messages in the online log and asked about the cause, impact on queries and fix. Replies pointed to the release notes: the IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ environment variable controls the number of simultaneous KAIO requests (range 10-5000, default 1000), and raising it (e.g. export IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ=2300) addresses the message. The impact question was only speculatively answered (I/O likely falls back to AIO threads); no definitive answer on query failures, and the thread ends in a flame exchange.

Hi All,
We are using Informix 9.4 on HPUX 11i with KAIO turned on. We are using =
ESQLC Code, JDBC, Stored Procedure and dbaccess to access the database. =
We have observed the following error message in the informix log file. I =
have the following questions with regards to this error message:
1. What is the reason for this error message ?
2. What is the impact on database queries? Would there be some queries =
that would have failed?
3. How to resolve this error message?

In case you didn't
An environment variable IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ is provided to specify
the number of simultaneous KAIO requests that are processed by the
server at one time. The value can be set in the range of 10 to 5000,
the default being 1000. If the error
"KAIO: out of OS resources, errno = %d, pid = %d" occurs,
consider increasing the value of IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ.
IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ=2300; export IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ
(for Bourne or Korn Shell)
setenv IFMX_HPKAIO_NUM_REQ 2300 (for C Shell)

Hello,
the explanation from Keith how to resolve the error is from the relevant part
of the release notes.
But that does not answer question 2: 2. What is the impact on database
queries? (or the database)
I could not find anything about that in the release notes. Is there no impact?
Or only performance?

Andreas Kutsche

I think it just hands them off to AIO threads. I'm not sure what would
happen if you didn't have any.
