Currently at AIX 4.3.3 (ML10) and IDS 9.21.UC4 and will be upgrading
to AIX 5.2 and IDS 9.40.UC2 (using 32bit kernel and staying that way).
Question: Is there any reason not to install (pre-install) IDS 9.40 (a
new INFORMIXDIR of course) while the OS is still at AIX 4.3.3?
But will not be initializing any instances until after AIX is at 5.2.
Save some time during implementation and can get the onconfig/sqlhosts
(and whatever) files setup and checked. Also upgrading 4GL and SQL to
7.32 from 7.30.
And while here, any thoughts on migration where we are doing a
dbexport from the 9.21 instances and a dbimport into new 9.40
instances? Initial testing has not discovered any issues. Then later
blow away the 9.21 instances. Very small databases (5GB each) but we
run 17 instances on a S80 with 18processors and 12GB memory attached
to shark (IBM ESS) disk.
Thanks for any help!

Yes; the install will fail because the brand program produced for AIX
5.x (most probably) won't run under 4.3.3. You could do the physical
copying, but not the (necessary) branding. You might dink it with the
9.21 brand - but you're on your own working out how to get that to work.

Likewise any Informix product.

Sounds sensible to me. Consider whether there's any benefit to
sorting any of the data files in the exported data - one thing that I
don't think DB-Export provides you with any control over. For
example, sorting in primary key order might be beneficial...
