Cursing curses

Does anyone know a way to get curses not to do so dang many full-screen redraws? (This is -not- related to shelling out to other commands.) I haven't done an extensive analysis, but it seems that it often decides to redraw the -whole- screen when only a part of it changes (e.g., opening a window, redrawing stuff in a window). It does this on different terminal types so I'm fairly sure it's not a termcap/terminfo problem. It does a clear screen then full redraw. Blech.
